Gluten-free in stores – this is where the biggest mistakes happen😬

Hyllor med glutenfritt i affären

Despite separate shelves and entire sections with gluten-free, there is unfortunately always a big risk that something with wheat flour will sneak into the range. The most common are vegan options that are placed together with gluten-free for some reason. Vegans eat wheat flour, but their voluntary food choice has absolutely nothing to do with gluten hypersensitivity. A gluten-free diet is not a free choice, but there are gluten-intolerant people who are also vegans, which is why I think the store is confusing the concepts. A grocery store in Helsinki, Finland has invested really big in an entire long wall as a separate section with only gluten-free products, see the pictures. But if you look closer, not everything is gluten-free products anyway. There is always the risk of making a mistake, and you must therefore remember to read the ingredient lists extra carefully, even if it is a completely gluten-free section. The gluten trap is real!
