This is not your typical travel story
From April 5–24, 2026, I’m documenting my 19-day trip as someone highly sensitive to gluten, wheat starch, and cross-contamination. No guesswork. No shortcuts. No “it’s probably fine.”
This is about: • Extreme planning • Safe snack systems • Restaurant research before arrival • Asking, checking, double-checking and asking again • Avoiding hidden gluten traps most people don’t even think about. If you’ve ever been “glutened,” you already know: one mistake can ruin everything. My blog is meant to be a safe space for us who are struggling with a highly gluten-sensitive way of life. You are not alone in this.
There’s a moment before every trip
For most people, it’s excitement.
Packing outfits. Checking passports. Dreaming about food.
For me it’s something else entirely.
It’s silence. Focus. Calculation.
Because this is not just a trip.
It’s a controlled operation.
The Reality No One Sees
Being highly sensitive to gluten isn’t about preference.
It’s not a lifestyle. It’s not a trend.
It’s a constant awareness that one mistake, one small, invisible detail can destroy days of your life.
Hidden gluten.
Wheat starch.
Cross-contamination.
Things most people don’t even think about… are the only things I think about.
April 5–24, 2026 The Mission
Nineteen days.
Multiple locations.
Buses. Boats. Ferries. Terminals. Airports. Flights. Hostels. Hotels. Accommodations. Restaurants.
Unknown kitchens. Unknown routines. Unknown risks.
And one non-negotiable rule:
I do not get glutened.
Not once.
What That Actually Means
It means I don’t “hope for the best.”
I research – before I even arrive!
I read menus in advance.
I check ingredients.
I look for hidden risks most people miss.
And when I get there?
I ask. Then I ask again.
Then I rephrase the question, just to make sure nothing was misunderstood.
Because “gluten-free” doesn’t always mean safe.
And “it should be fine” is never good enough.
The System
Over time, I’ve built a system. Not a routine but a system.
Research.
Ask.
Check.
Double-check.
Ask again.
It sounds exhausting.
Sometimes, it is.
But it’s also the reason I can travel at all.
The Travel Kit
Before anything else, there’s the packing.
Not just clothes. Not just essentials.
But a carefully selected gluten-free survival kit:
Safe snacks I trust.
Backups for the backups.
Things I know won’t fail me when everything else might.
Because there will be moments with long travel days, delayed flights, unfamiliar places where safe food simply isn’t available.
And in those moments, preparation is everything.
The Mental Load
This is the part people don’t see.
The constant scanning.
The quiet calculations.
The need to stay one step ahead at all times.
It’s not fear. It’s awareness.
Because once you’ve been glutened… you understand exactly what’s at stake.
But Here’s the Truth
Despite all of this I still travel.
Not carelessly. Not spontaneously.
But intentionally.
Because with the right system, the right preparation, and the right level of control…
It is possible to have a safe, beautiful, and genuinely enjoyable travel experience.
This Is Where You Come In
If you’re reading this, you probably already know.
The looks.
The questions.
The “can’t you just…” suggestions.
The feeling of having to explain something invisible over and over again.
So let me say this clearly:
You are not alone in this.
What This Series Will Show You
From April 5–24 I’ll be documenting everything:
What I pack (and why)
How I choose where to eat
How I communicate with staff
How I avoid hidden gluten traps
How I handle uncertainty in real time
What works and what doesn’t
No filters. No shortcuts. No pretending it’s easier than it is.
Just the reality and the system behind it.
Before We Begin
This is your invitation.
To follow along.
To learn.
To recognize yourself in this experience.
And maybe to feel just a little more in control the next time you travel.
